If the sound on your computer suddenly stops working, you will quickly find that silence is not golden. Many issues can cause a computer to go silent. Here are the steps you can take to find and fix the problem:
1. Check to see whether the built-in speakers are muted or set to a low volume level. To do so, click the speaker icon, which will be in the lower right corner of your desktop. If you do not see the icon, it might be hidden. Click the small white triangle in the lower right corner to show the hidden icons. If there is no speaker icon, the sound drivers are likely not installed correctly.
2. Inspect the external speakers (if applicable). Make sure that:
- The speakers are plugged into an electrical outlet and turned on.
- The speakers are plugged into the correct port on the computer.
- The speakers’ cables and connectors are free from damage.
- The speakers’ volume control is set to an appropriate level.
3. Make sure the correct output device is selected in Windows. Right-click the speaker icon, select "Playback Devices", and make sure that the speakers you want to use are selected.
4. Check to see if the Volume Mixer is correctly configured. Right-click the speaker icon, select "Open Volume Mixer", and make sure each volume control is set to an appropriate level.
If you still do not have sound, contact your IT service provider. They can use troubleshooting tools to identify the problem. They might need to replace hardware or reinstall (or update) a driver to get the sound working again.
